North Carolina’s Outer Banks History Center Exhibit to Feature Elizabethan Gardens Wedding Album
Album to feature photos, invitations, personal memories and Garden history
Couples married in The Elizabethan Gardens, located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, are invited to share their memories with others. On September 2, 2005 “The Elizabethan Gardens: Crown Jewel of the Outer Banks” exhibit will be unveiled at the Outer Banks History Center, located within the Roanoke Island Festival Park complex in Manteo, North Carolina.
The exhibit will feature a wedding album of couples that had their magical day at The Elizabethan Gardens, along with various aspects of The Garden’s history. The exhibit will highlight The Garden’s Elizabethan links to the past along with the development and design of The Gardens and its statuary. The Elizabethan Gardens and the Outer Banks History Center, both located on Roanoke Island, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, are teaming up to develop the exhibit.
“Weddings are one of the family traditions that have grown in The Gardens for many years,” says Executive Director Horace Whitfield. “We are looking for photos, invitations, personal memories or anecdotes that anyone is willing to send us. We don’t know yet who the first couple was or when the first wedding occurred. This is a good example of one part of The Garden’s rich history that we are trying to recover.”
“We have hoped for many years to collect the history of this important cultural site,” says OBHC Curator KaeLi Spiers. “Through partnering, the History Center Gallery will be able to tell yet another story of an icon on our Outer Banks landscape.”
Anyone interested in participating in this unique project should send information to The Elizabethan Gardens, 1411 National Park Drive, Manteo, NC 27954 by July 15, 2005.
The Outer Banks History Center is a regional archives and research library administered by the NC State Archives located across from the Manteo Waterfront. The Elizabethan Gardens is located at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site adjacent to the Lost Colony Waterside Theater. Both are open to the public year round.
